That ‘First Day’

Everyone has to start somewhere.

Even though individuals are excited about the prospects of starting something new, it is only human nature to feel apprehensive and fear change. No-one wants to encounter the effort in adapting for it not to be worthwhile. But the first day has to come, whether a new job, internship, school or place; before you know it you’ll look back in hindsight and question why you felt that way!

I am naturally of a nervous disposition, however I am not in fear of trying something new. So when I was about to start my new internship two weeks ago as a General Management Intern, I couldn’t wait. It was something I hadn’t encountered before where the main focus was in dealing with workers and understanding how to organise the daily runnings.

So the fateful day arrived, packed my bags with an excess of pens, pads and even an umbrella during a heatwave! Although it did look like was going on a round the world trip, I would definitely advise in making sure you are prepared. It sounds patronising, I know, but I turned up on my first day of Sixth Form forgetting my notepad. Asking for paper was quite an embarrassment. Maybe ask someone what is necessary to bring when you arrive and make a list, it demonstrates that you are taking the opportunity seriously.

I don’t know if this applies to boys as much… but I always ask what the dress code is prior to arriving. I know a few people who didn’t ask then turned up either overly formal/informal, if you’re nervous on the day anyway, you don’t want that extra worry of people looking at you and sticking out like a sore thumb. There is no harm in asking, and you can relax knowing your appearance is suitable. Take note of what other people are wearing, it’s a bit vain, but it is another dimension to your first day.

When you enter accentuate your soft skills simple things like a firm handshake, confident hello and smile! The employer has taken you on and needs to confirm their first impressions of you. Likewise, other interns/peers are feeling the same as you and are in the same boat, if you have great poise then others shall reflect that and it provides reassurance to others about the new change. It doesn’t cost anything, yet it is very effective; it sets you up with a great first impression.

Similarly, get to know everyone and network. You can receive contacts that may help you later in your career and are priceless, don’t wait around for them to come to you; go to them explain who you are, why you’re there and if they need anything offer your help. Try to add them on LinkedIn. What goes around comes around. Doing this on your first day, prepares for beyond the last day.

Always ask questions, following someone like a lost puppy hoping that a task is told to you, doesn’t show great tenacity. Ask: what can I do? How are you doing that? Why is this required? What does this mean? What can I do to develop this skill? What are the implications? You want to make sure you make the most out of your time there, being persistent and initiative really aids in doing so. Whip out that notepad and one pen of ten packs you’ve packed, and write down notes! The first day tends to show you the basics which you don’t want to forget.

Be cheeky, if you want a challenging task and more work, then ask! I would think it is quite hard to turn down someone who doesn’t want more workload.

At the end of your first day, hopefully the ice is broken and you’re into routine. If the day has been positive and of value, tell your employer that and thank them. Most people like feedback, and want to make sure that what they are doing is effective. However, beyond that, it highlights manners and your engagement.

These may come across fundamental, and to be fair I feel really patronising typing them up. But it is just as simple to forget the basics when nerves overcome you. Take a deep breathe, the day has to finish, but hopefully you’ve made the most out it!

Now you can get on with what you do best, from day two onwards!

Good Luck if you’re starting somewhere! Remember that everyone has done it!
